Moissanite is a gemstone said to be “born from the stars” due to it first being discovered in a meteorite crater. It is a naturally occurring mineral made up of silicon carbide.

However, since it is small in size and its occurrence in nature is extremely rare, lab-created moissanite is used in jewellery, meaning it is a conflict-free and more sustainable option with guaranteed origins. 

It has properties that are strikingly similar to diamonds and a refractive index that is higher than diamonds, leading to a superior brilliance. This makes the two stones particularly difficult to differentiate between unless by a trained eye and is why it is increasingly being recognised as the top contender amongst the other diamond alternatives. Even with all these amazing qualities, moissanite is still only roughly a 10th of the price of an equivalent sized diamond. 

It is important to note that Moissanite is not a diamond simulant, but simply an alternative, as it is a naturally occurring stone in its own right. Because of its durability, moissanite can be found in a variety of cuts, which gives a plethora of options for moissanite engagement ring designs and other jewellery settings.
